The Unexpected Life Lessons I Learned From a Houseplant

My Thumb Was Anything But Green

Let’s be honest, my history with plants was less than stellar. I’d managed to kill cacti, for crying out loud! So, when my well-meaning friend gifted me a peace lily, my immediate thought was, “How long can I keep this thing alive before it joins the great compost heap in the sky?”

I envisioned wilting leaves, drooping stems, and a chorus of “I told you so” echoing in my ears. To my surprise, something unexpected happened – my little peace lily thrived. Not only did it survive my less-than-expert care, but it flourished, growing into a lush, vibrant testament to my (admittedly limited) nurturing abilities.

peace lilies need a break from the H2O. Once I learned to read the subtle signs – a slight droop, a less-than-perky leaf – and adjust my watering schedule accordingly, my plant thrived.

It was a valuable lesson that extended beyond the realm of horticulture. How often do we smother the people and projects we care about with good intentions, only to overwhelm them in the process? Sometimes, the best thing we can do is step back, assess the situation, and offer support in measured doses.

Lesson 2: Embrace Imperfection

As my peace lily grew, it wasn’t always a picture of flawless beauty. A leaf would tear, a stem might bend at an awkward angle. There were moments when I felt the urge to “fix” these imperfections, to prune and reshape it into some idealized version of a houseplant.

But then I’d realize, those imperfections were part of its journey, a testament to its resilience. Just like us, plants grow and change, adapting to their environment and bearing the marks of their experiences. It was a powerful reminder to embrace the imperfections, both in my plant and in myself. Those “flaws” often add character and tell a story, making us who we are.
