The Great Phone Number Mix-Up of 2023 (and Why I Still Answer)

We’ve all been there. The dreaded unknown number flashes across your phone screen, leaving you in a split-second debate: answer or ignore? Usually, I’m a staunch ignorer. But something about this particular day, perhaps the way the sun was hitting my dusty apartment window just so, inspired me to throw caution to the wind and answer.

The Case of the Missing Cat and the Confused Pizza Guy

“Hello? Is Mittens there? It’s Brenda, and it’s urgent!” The voice on the other end was frantic. I glanced at my own cat, Slinky Malinky, who, judging by the disdainful flick of his tail, was most definitely not missing, nor answering to the name Mittens.

Thus began my descent into what can only be described as “The Great Phone Number Mix-Up of 2023.” It turned out my new number previously belonged to a woman named Brenda, who, in addition to being a worried cat mom, seemed to be wildly popular. Over the next few weeks, I fielded calls about everything from overdue library books (apparently, Brenda had a penchant for mystery novels) to a very confusing order for a pineapple and anchovy pizza (a combination I wouldn’t wish on my worst enemy).

Phone Line

As the calls kept coming, I started to piece together a picture of this mysterious Brenda. She was a woman of eclectic tastes (hence the pizza), a lover of all creatures great and small (RIP Mittens, wherever you are), and, if one particularly emotional phone call was anything to go by, a champion of knitting circles everywhere.

This particular call started innocently enough. “Brenda, honey, it’s Gladys! How did the competition go?” Before I could even utter a word, Gladys launched into a detailed account of her prize-winning scarf, the treachery of uneven tension, and the cutthroat world of competitive knitting. By the time she paused for a breath (a full five minutes later), I was strangely invested. I found myself offering words of comfort and encouragement, assuring Gladys that Brenda would be back to reclaim her knitting crown next year.

Why I Still Answer the Wrong Number

It’s been a few months since the calls started, and while they’ve slowed down, I still get the occasional inquiry about Mittens or Brenda’s whereabouts. Each call is like a mini-adventure, a glimpse into the life of a complete stranger.

But the real reason I still answer? It’s the laughter. It’s the shared absurdity of it all, the reminder that sometimes, life throws you curveballs (or in this case, misdialed phone calls) that turn out to be surprisingly delightful.
