The Unexpected Life Lessons I Learned from a Houseplant

My Journey From Plant Killer to… Slightly Less of a Plant Killer

Let’s be honest, my thumbs are far from green. In fact, I’m pretty sure I could kill a cactus in a desert rainstorm. So, when a well-intentioned friend gifted me a “low-maintenance” peace lily, I accepted with a smile and a healthy dose of skepticism. Little did I know, this leafy little fella was about to become my unlikely life coach.

peace lily like royalty. Constant watering, prime window real estate, even serenading it with my questionable rendition of “Here Comes the Sun.” The result? It started to wilt. Turns out, I was drowning the poor thing. A frantic Google search revealed that peace lilies prefer their soil to dry out between waterings. Who knew?

This taught me a valuable lesson about relationships—both with plants and people. Sometimes, too much attention can be suffocating. It’s important to give others space to breathe and grow in their own way. Sometimes, a little tough love—like letting your plant get thirsty—is the best thing you can do.

Lesson #2: Embracing Resilience and the Power of Patience

After my overwatering debacle, my peace lily went through a rough patch. Drooping, yellowing leaves—it looked pretty pathetic. I was convinced I had achieved plant homicide. But then, I remembered what my therapist always says: “When in doubt, wait it out.” I resisted the urge to overcompensate and simply gave the plant space to recover.
