We’ve all been there. You’re staring into the abyss of an empty suitcase, the siren song of “what if” echoing in your ears. Suddenly, you’re convinced you need three different jackets, four pairs of “just in case” shoes, and enough toiletries to stock a small pharmacy – for a weekend trip.
That Time I Packed for Every Season (in July)
My personal overpacking Everest happened a few years ago. I was heading to sunny Southern California for a weeklong conference in July. Sounds simple, right? Sunshine, beaches, maybe a light sweater for the evenings. Nope. My brain, in its infinite (and completely irrational) wisdom, decided I needed to be prepared for every eventuality.
What if there was a freak blizzard? Better pack a scarf and gloves. What if I spontaneously decided to climb Mount Baldy? Hiking boots, check. What if I got invited to a fancy dinner party…with vampires? Little black dress and garlic necklace, naturally.
The Art of Packing Light (And Why It Matters)
Over the years, I’ve come to realize that overpacking is less about practicality and more about anxiety. It’s the fear of the unknown, the “what ifs” that haunt our packing lists. But, I’m on a mission to reform. Here are a few tips I’ve picked up along the way:
- Plan your outfits, not just your clothes. This helps you avoid packing random items you’ll never actually wear.
- Embrace the power of laundry. Seriously, you can wash clothes on the road. No need to pack for every single day.
- Downsize your toiletries. Travel-sized containers are your friends. And leave the garlic necklace at home, unless you’re really sure about those vampires.
The Roll, Don’t Fold Method: Wrinkle-Free Packing
I’ve also discovered the magic of rolling clothes instead of folding them. Not only does it save space, but it also helps prevent wrinkles. It’s like origami, but for your suitcase.
I’ve even started challenging myself to pack in a carry-on suitcase for shorter trips. It’s a work in progress, but I’m slowly learning that less really can be more.
