From Brown Thumb to Accidental Plant Parent
Confession time: I’m not what you’d call “good” with plants. In fact, I have a graveyard of succulents past that would make you weep. So, when my well-meaning friend gifted me a peace lily, let’s just say my hopes weren’t exactly high. I pictured a slow, tragic decline, culminating in a dried-out husk that served as a constant reminder of my plant-killing ways.
Lesson #1: The Importance of Giving Attention
Okay, I wasn’t completely negligent. I watered Percy occasionally, when I remembered. More often than not, it was after he’d dramatically drooped over the side of his pot, looking like he was about to offer me his last will and testament. Yet, every time, he bounced back with a vengeance. It was like he was saying, “See? A little attention goes a long way!”
And you know what? He was right. It made me realize how often I neglect the things that need attention in my own life—relationships, personal projects, even just taking a few minutes for myself. Just like Percy, those things flourish when I give them even a little bit of love and care.
Lesson #2: The Power of Resilience
Percy has been through a lot in the time we’ve been together. He’s survived being accidentally knocked off a shelf by a rogue frisbee (don’t ask), a near-death experience with a heatwave, and a chronic case of “forgetful plant parent.”
