The Unexpected Life Lessons I Learned From a Houseplant

Confessions of a Serial Plant Killer

Okay, maybe “serial killer” is a bit dramatic. But let’s just say I haven’t had the best track record with houseplants. In fact, I’m pretty sure my local plant shop has a picture of me up with a big red X over it. You know, like those “eight most wanted” posters at the post office, except mine would say, “Most Likely to Overwater.”

So, imagine my surprise when my friend, bless her optimistic soul, gifted me a peace lily for my birthday. I’ll admit, I was skeptical. This poor, unsuspecting plant was about to enter the Bermuda Triangle of my apartment. But, determined to prove myself wrong (and not disappoint my friend), I vowed to keep this lily alive. Little did I know, this wasn’t just a mission to keep a plant from wilting; it was a crash course in life itself.

Lesson #1: Sometimes, Less is More (Especially With Watering)

My first mistake? Suffocating the poor lily with love, or more accurately, water. I showered it with attention, convinced that more H2O equaled more happiness. Turns out, plants, much like people, need room to breathe.
