It happened again this morning. I reached into the depths of my sock drawer, that chaotic land of mismatched stripes and forgotten patterns, and emerged empty-handed. Well, not entirely empty. My right hand clutched a single, forlorn tube sock, its mate vanished into the ether. Where do they go, these AWOL socks? Next, I turned to folklore. Every culture has its myths, and the legend of the Sock Gremlins is as pervasive as it is perplexing. These mischievous creatures, so the story goes, sneak into homes under the cover of darkness, their tiny hands snatching socks with glee. Was my apartment, unbeknownst to me, a haven for these miniature miscreants? I left out a carefully crafted trap—a trail of brightly colored socks leading to an empty shoebox—but alas, it remained untouched. The Sock Gremlins, it seemed, were not to blame. Or were they just exceptionally skilled at avoiding amateur traps?
