The Unexpected Life Lessons I Learned from a Houseplant

life, resilience, and the importance of not overwatering than I ever expected.

Plant (yes, I named him) were a masterclass in over-enthusiasm. I watered him every day, convinced that more H2O equaled more happiness. Oh, how wrong I was. Percy started to droop, his leaves turning an alarming shade of yellow. Panicked, I frantically Googled “Help! My plant is drowning!”

Turns out, plants, like people, don’t appreciate being suffocated with affection (or in this case, water). I learned the hard way that sometimes, a little tough love goes a long way. I cut back on the watering, gave Percy some space to breathe, and prayed to the plant gods for a miracle.

Percy was a goner. But much to my surprise (and immense relief), he started to bounce back. New leaves unfurled, reaching for the sunlight like tiny green flags of victory. It was a powerful reminder that even after a setback, even when we feel wilted and defeated, there’s always the potential for growth and renewal.

Percy’s resilience became a source of inspiration. If he could bounce back from the brink of death by overwatering, surely I could handle that looming deadline or awkward social interaction. He became a silent cheerleader, reminding me with every new leaf that life, like plant care, is all about adapting, persevering, and never giving up hope.

Lesson #3: Finding Joy in the Simple Things

Before Percy, the only green things in my apartment were the fuzzy leftovers in the back of my fridge. But as I learned to care for him, I discovered a newfound appreciation for the simple joys of plant parenthood. The satisfaction of watching a new leaf unfurl, the quiet companionship of a living organism sharing my space, the sheer relief of not killing something for once – these were small victories that brought unexpected joy to my life.
