From Black Thumb to Budding Botanist (Almost)
Let’s be honest, my thumbs have always been more “black hole” than “green thumb.” I once managed to kill a cactus. A CACTUS. So, when my well-meaning friend gifted me a peace lily for my birthday, I accepted it with a smile and an internal sigh of impending doom. Little did I know, this leafy little dude was about to school me in ways I never expected.
And you know what? The same applies to life. We all have those moments where we feel like we’re wilting under pressure. But by recognizing the early signs of stress and taking steps to address them—whether it’s taking a mental health day or finally having that difficult conversation—we can prevent minor issues from escalating into major dramas.
Lesson #2: Growth Takes Time (And a Little Pruning)
For months, my peace lily just…existed. It wasn’t dying, but it wasn’t exactly thriving either. Then, I learned about pruning. Apparently, getting rid of the dead or wilting leaves allows the plant to redirect its energy towards new growth. Armed with this newfound knowledge (and a pair of kitchen scissors), I gave my lily a much-needed haircut.
And guess what? It worked! New leaves sprouted, fuller and greener than ever before. It was a powerful reminder that sometimes, letting go of the old—be it outdated beliefs, toxic relationships, or yes, even wilted leaves—is essential for personal growth. It can feel scary to prune away parts of ourselves, but it creates space for something new and beautiful to blossom.
