My Thumb Is Not So Green
Let’s be honest, I’m not exactly known for my nurturing skills. I once killed a cactus. A CACTUS. You know, the plant that thrives in the desert with minimal water? Yeah, that one. So, when my well-meaning friend gifted me a houseplant, I accepted it with a mix of trepidation and a healthy dose of “Let’s see how long this one lasts.”
To my surprise, the little green guy (I still haven’t figured out its actual name) persevered. It even sprouted a few new leaves, which I mistook for a good sign. Little did I know, my plant was basically living in a tiny shoebox, its roots desperately searching for more space. It was the plant equivalent of trying to fit into your jeans from high school – uncomfortable and a little bit sad.
Once I realized my error (thank you, Google!), I promptly repotted my resilient friend. The lesson? Sometimes we need to break free from our comfort zones, even when it feels scary. And trust me, repotting a plant is way less intimidating than, say, asking for a promotion or finally going on that blind date.
Lesson #2: Sometimes Tough Love Is Necessary (and Water, Obviously)
Now, you’d think after the “Great Repotting Fiasco of 2023” I would have learned my lesson. But alas, I am a creature of habit (and forgetfulness). I overwatered, I underwatered, I even managed to scorch a few leaves by placing the poor thing too close to the window. (In my defense, the sun was being particularly aggressive that day.)
Yet, through it all, my little plant persisted. It taught me that sometimes tough love is necessary. We all need a little nudge now and then, a reminder to drink more water (both literally and metaphorically), and to step away from the metaphorical sun when we’re getting burned out.
