The Unexpected Life Lessons I Learned from a Houseplant

My Brown Thumb Turns Green(ish)

I’ve never been particularly gifted in the plant department. In fact, I’m pretty sure I could kill a cactus with kindness (and too much water). So, when my well-meaning friend gifted me a perfectly healthy peace lily for my birthday, I accepted it with a mix of gratitude and trepidation. “How hard could it be?” I thought, naively optimistic.

Turns out, harder than I thought.

Lesson #1: Sometimes, Less is More (Especially When it Comes to Watering)

My first mistake? Overwatering. Oh, how I overwatered that poor plant. I showered it with love (and H2O) on an almost daily basis, convinced I was nurturing it back to life every time its leaves drooped even slightly. Spoiler alert: I wasn’t.

It took a few weeks (and a concerning amount of wilting) before I finally caved and consulted the internet. Apparently, peace lilies prefer their soil to dry out a bit between waterings. Who knew?

This was a humbling lesson in restraint, not just for plant care but for life. Sometimes, the best thing we can do is step back, observe, and resist the urge to over-parent, over-help, or over-water (both literally and figuratively).

Lesson #2: Even When We Mess Up, There’s Always Hope for Growth

Remember how I said I could kill a cactus? Well, I came pretty close with this peace lily. After weeks of my well-intentioned but misguided care, it was looking, well, less than peaceful.

But then something amazing happened. I (finally) listened to the internet’s sage advice, adjusted my watering habits, and gave my plant some space. And guess what? It started to bounce back! New leaves emerged, the drooping stopped, and my once-sad little plant regained its vibrant green glow.

It was a powerful reminder that even when we make mistakes (and trust me, I’d made a few), there’s always a chance for growth and renewal. Sometimes, all it takes is a little course correction and a whole lot of patience.
