The Unexpected Life Lessons I Learned from a Houseplant

My Brown Thumb Gets a Green Roommate

Let’s be honest, I’m not exactly known for my nurturing nature. Okay, fine, I’m the queen of killing houseplants. Cacti, succulents, even those supposedly “unkillable” snake plants—they all met their demise under my care. So, when my well-meaning friend gifted me a bright green, leafy friend for my birthday, I accepted it with a mix of dread and cautious optimism. Little did I know, this plant (which I creatively named Gerald) would do more than just survive in my care; it would teach me some valuable life lessons.

Lesson #1: Patience is a Virtue (and Fertilizer Helps)

At first, I treated Gerald like any other plant I’d encountered—with a healthy dose of neglect. I watered him sporadically, forgot to rotate him towards the sunlight, and generally assumed he’d wither away like his predecessors. To my surprise, he didn’t. He stubbornly clung to life, albeit with a few drooping leaves and a slightly paler shade of green.

Gerald perked up. New leaves unfurled, the green intensified, and he even sprouted a new stem. It was a revelation—patience and a little effort really do pay off.

Lesson #2: Embrace Growth Spurts (and the Occasional Pruning)

As Gerald thrived, he started to, well, grow. A lot. What was once a compact, manageable plant transformed into a leafy behemoth threatening to take over my living room. I learned that growth, while a beautiful thing, often requires some adjustments.

Just like Gerald needed repotting and the occasional trim to flourish, I realized that I, too, needed to embrace change and create space for personal growth. Sometimes, that meant letting go of old habits or stepping outside my comfort zone, even if it felt a bit uncomfortable, like repotting a spiky cactus (ouch!).
