The Unexpected Life Lesson I Learned From a Houseplant

My Thumbs: Not So Green

Let’s be honest, I’m not exactly known for my nurturing abilities. I once killed a cactus, for crying out loud! So, when my well-meaning friend gifted me a houseplant – a supposedly “easy to care for” peace lily – I accepted with a smile that was equal parts polite and panicked.

lily with attention, which, in my mind, translated to copious amounts of water. I’m talking Noah’s Ark levels of H2O.

Unsurprisingly, my lily did not flourish. In fact, it started to resemble a sad, droopy salad. Panicked, I did what any reasonable person on the verge of plant-parenting failure would do – I consulted the internet.

Turns out, I was a certified over-waterer. Who knew?

Armed with this newfound knowledge, I went in the complete opposite direction. I’m talking desert-level dryness. My poor lily probably thought it had been kidnapped by a camel and shipped off to the Sahara.
