The Unexpected Life Lessons I Learned from a Houseplant

My Brown Thumb Turns Green: A Houseplant Journey

Let’s be honest, my thumbs have never been particularly green. In fact, I’m pretty sure I could kill a cactus in a desert. So, when my well-meaning friend gifted me a houseplant—a perfectly healthy, vibrant peace lily—I accepted it with a grimace disguised as a grateful smile.

“Don’t worry,” I told my friend, “I’ll take good care of it.” Internally, I was already planning the eulogy. Little did I know, this plant wouldn’t just survive under my care; it would thrive and teach me a thing or two about life in the process.

Percy, was looking decidedly less peaceful and more…peaced off.

Just when I was about to toss Percy in the compost bin (don’t judge!), my neighbor, a gardening enthusiast, intervened. “You’re babying it,” she declared, shaking her head. “Sometimes, a little neglect is all they need to toughen up.”

Skeptical but desperate, I followed her advice. I cut back on the watering, found Percy a nice, indirectly lit spot, and basically…left him alone. And guess what? He loved it!

Percy’s near-death experience taught me a valuable lesson: Sometimes, we need to step back, let go of the reins, and allow ourselves (and others) the space to figure things out.

Lesson #2: Celebrating the Subtle Growth We Often Miss

As the weeks turned into months, Percy became a permanent fixture in my living room. He wasn’t flashy or demanding, but he was steadily, quietly growing. A new leaf here, a slightly taller stem there—subtle changes that I almost missed.

One day, while watering Percy (on schedule, I might add!), I realized just how much he’d grown. What started as a small, almost fragile plant was now a lush, thriving testament to resilience and perseverance.
