The Unexpected Life Lessons I Learned From a Houseplant

From Black Thumb to Budding Plant Parent

Let’s be honest, I’m not exactly known for my green thumb. In fact, my history with plants is more of a graveyard of good intentions. I’m the queen of overwatering, underwatering, and forgetting they even exist. So, when my well-meaning friend gifted me a peace lily for my birthday, I accepted it with a smile and a silent prayer for the poor thing.

To my surprise, the lily thrived! It even graced me with a beautiful white bloom, which, considering my track record, felt nothing short of miraculous. This small victory sparked something in me. Maybe, just maybe, I wasn’t destined to be a plant murderer after all.

Lesson #1: Cultivating Patience Through Plant Parenthood

My newfound confidence led me to a local nursery, where I promptly fell in love with a majestic fiddle leaf fig. Its large, sculptural leaves whispered promises of elegance and sophistication. I envisioned it gracing my living room, transforming my apartment into an urban jungle oasis. Reality, however, had other plans.

The fiddle leaf fig, as I soon discovered, is the drama queen of the plant world. One minute its leaves were perky and vibrant, the next they were drooping like a teenager denied screen time. I researched, I adjusted watering schedules, I even resorted to talking to it (don’t judge). Finally, after weeks of what felt like horticultural therapy, a single new leaf unfurled.
