The Unexpected Life Lessons I Learned from a Houseplant

My Thumb Is Not So Green

Let’s be honest, I’m not exactly known for my nurturing abilities. My husband once joked that I could kill a cactus with kindness (though I maintain that succulent was already on its last legs when I got it). So, when my well-intentioned friend gifted me a houseplant – a beautiful, vibrant peace lily – I accepted it with a mix of gratitude and trepidation.

plant is a recipe for disaster (who knew?). Within weeks, my once-thriving lily had transformed into a wilted, droopy shadow of its former self. I felt like a terrible plant parent, ready to accept defeat and relegate the poor thing to the compost bin.

But then, a glimmer of hope! I noticed a tiny, green shoot emerging from the soil. Against all odds, my neglected peace lily was making a comeback.

That resilient little plant taught me that even when we feel beaten down, even when we’re neglected (by ourselves or others), the potential for growth and renewal is always present. We just need to tap into that inner strength and keep reaching for the light.

Lesson #2: Small Changes Can Make a Big Difference

Inspired by my plant’s tenacious spirit, I decided to up my plant-parenting game. I invested in a watering can with a long spout (no more excuses!) and even downloaded a plant care app (don’t judge!).

To my surprise, I actually started to enjoy the routine. Taking a few minutes each day to water my plant, check its leaves, and give it a little encouragement (“You got this, little buddy!”) became a surprisingly grounding and mindful practice.
