Confessions of a Reformed Plant Killer
Let’s be honest, I wasn’t always a friend to foliage. In fact, I had a bit of a reputation for being a plant assassin. My thumbs were far from green; they were more of a deathly gray. I overwatered, underwatered, and generally neglected my leafy companions until they surrendered to a crispy demise.
But then, something changed. Maybe it was the pandemic, maybe it was a quarter-life crisis, or maybe it was just a yearning for something green and alive in my apartment that wasn’t my sourdough starter. Whatever the reason, I decided to give plants another shot. And you know what? I’m so glad I did.
And the best part? Plants are incredibly low-maintenance companions. They don’t demand walks, they don’t judge your questionable dance moves, and they certainly don’t care if you haven’t showered in a few days (although they might appreciate the extra humidity). All they ask for is a little water, some sunlight, and maybe a chat every now and then (don’t worry, your secret’s safe with me).
Benefits of Houseplants: More Than Just Pretty Green Things
Beyond the emotional rewards, there are some very real benefits to sharing your space with plants. Studies have shown that indoor plants can:
- Boost your mood and reduce stress: Being around plants has a calming effect and can help lower cortisol levels.
- Improve air quality: Plants act as natural air purifiers, absorbing toxins and releasing oxygen.
- Increase focus and productivity: Studies have shown that being around plants can improve concentration and cognitive function.
- Add life and vibrancy to your space: Let’s face it, plants just make everything look better. They can transform a dull corner into a green oasis and add a touch of personality to any room.
