We’ve all been there. You’re at the grocery store, minding your own business, when suddenly, you lock eyes with IT. The one houseplant in the discount bin with the droopy leaves and the “Please love me” energy radiating from its sad little pot.
Okay, maybe that’s just me. But whatever the reason, we bring these botanical buddies into our homes with the best intentions. We tell ourselves (and maybe even the plant itself) that this time will be different, that this time, we won’t succumb to the dreaded black thumb curse.
My Little Green Teacher: Introducing Herbert the Peace Lily
And so began my journey with Herbert (yes, I name my plants, don’t judge). Herbert was a sorry-looking peace lily when I rescued him from the clearance rack. He was wilted, pale, and missing several chunks of leaves – a victim of either hungry squirrels or overzealous pruning shears.
