    Remember that game show, “Name That Tune?” You know, where contestants would desperately rack their brains, trying to identify a song within the first few notes? Well, replace the catchy melody with a phone number, and you’ve got a glimpse into the inner workings of my brain on any given day.

    It all came crashing down at the grocery store checkout. My phone, the keeper of all vital information, decided to take an impromptu nap, leaving me stranded with a cart full of snacks and a cashier expectantly waiting for my loyalty card number.

    Have Smartphones Taken Over Our Brains?

    Let’s be honest, our smartphones have become extensions of ourselves. They store our grocery lists, remind us of birthdays we’d otherwise forget, and yes, even hold hostage every phone number we’ve ever encountered. We’ve become so reliant on these pocket-sized marvels that we’ve outsourced a good chunk of our memory function to them.

    And I’m not just talking about phone numbers. Birthdays, anniversaries, that one friend’s new address that you swear you saved but can’t find – they’re all locked away in the digital fortress, accessible only with the right combination of swipes and taps.

    Remembering the Days of Landlines and Memorization

    Remember landlines? Those clunky contraptions tethered to the wall by a curly cord? Back in my day (cue the old-person voice), we memorized phone numbers. It was a rite of passage, like learning to tie your shoes or mastering the art of the perfect prank call.

    But alas, the world has moved on. Landlines are practically museum artifacts, and with them, our ability to recall a simple 7-digit sequence. It’s a classic case of “use it or lose it,” except the “it” is a crucial piece of information that could come in handy during, say, a zombie apocalypse when all technology inevitably fails.
